Poppy

Love and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we're left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.

Brandon

War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you're only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain...a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whisky, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I've lost—what we've lost. In the midst of destruction, she's a salvation I don't deserve.

I shouldn't love him.

I shouldn't love her.

Love is a war we never should have fought.

Review by: Tatia

First thing: as I'm writing this, know that there are tears streaming down my face. If there's a typo, know that it's because I couldn't see the screen through the blur.

If you don't know, Nicole Lynne is Stevie J. Cole and LP Lovell. They're the brilliant minds behind this story. Typically, when I read one of their books, I always go in blind. There's never been any doubt about if I'll love the story or not. I always do. So when I opened up War Poppy, I had no clue to the devastation that this book would cause me. This story of love, loss, torment, destruction, hope; it'll rip you wide open. At least, that's what it did to me.

When a war rips away a loved one, it doesn't only take one life. It always affects those still living, reliving the nightmares every time they close their eyes. Poppy may not have seen what happened first hand, but the war took her husband. It may as well have taken her too. All that's left is a shell of a girl. The only thing she has left is the hope of finding Brandon, her husband's best friend. They've all been together since they were 10. She needs Brandon now more than she ever has. She just doesn't know what to expect if she does find him.
Brandon is not who he used to be. The war will change you that way. When you wake up and see your best friends lifeless eyes staring back at you, the guilt, the anger, the depression, it eats you alive. The one person he promised to take care of is also the person he's afraid of dragging down with him.

This book, it's going to take you down. An ugly cry like you've never experienced. Heart shattering, soul crushing pain. That's how I felt. They say it's only fiction, but it sure feels real. How, in the span of the 2 days that it took me to read this, did I become so attached to these characters? We, as readers, subject ourselves to this torture for the sake of a good story. We subject ourselves to this pain, this devastation that completely obliterates us. I won't forget it. There isn't another book out there that can take its place. War Poppy has sealed its place as one of my top 5 favorite reads ever. An aspect of this story that I truly loved (besides everything), was that there is a song to go along with each chapter. Look up the songs. Listen to them as you're reading. That made this story hit me that much harder. The songs were perfect. Each one fit the scene so accurately that it was kind of scary. Be prepared and willing to go in with an open heart and mind. In typical Nicole Lynne fashion, this story is anything but hearts and flowers. It's haunting and hopeful at the same time.

6 Stars...This story deserves them all

Review by: Erin

This story is everything!! I fell in love immediately and had difficulty putting it down. The characters are incredible, so well researched and developed. The storyline is phenomenal, and really shows the commitment that went into writing this story. This story is full of all the feels and will have you in tears by the end. The end was just beautiful and everything I hoped it would be. These characters and their journey will definitely leave their mark on your soul.

5 Stars

Stevie J. Cole

Stevie J. Cole lives deep in the woods of Alabama with her husband and two precious daughters. She studied Epidemiology concentrating on cancer research but has always had a passion for writing. Some of her stories will strip you bare, some will give you nightmares, but the one thing she can promise is that she will always give you stories that make you feel.

Raw. Gritty. Love.
Because sometimes characters need to be flawed.

P.S. Stevie's greatest fear is the impending zombie apocalypse. Think about it: swarming armies of decaying, oozing corpses stumbling around with clicking teeth, trying to eat your face. Nothing about that is good. NOTHING!
