Our Song

BLURB:
Becca:
I broke up with Trip four months ago. But with the exception of my parents, I haven’t told anyone why. Not my friends, not my little sister, not even Asher.

Asher:
I’ve been missing my best friend every day for the last nine months. Even though Becca broke up with Trip months ago, she’s still been distant, even when we’re in the same room.

Trip:
She thinks she can break up with me and then go on a “family” vacation with him? I’m going to prove to both of them that she never should have left me.

Well it is not often that you read a debut novel and find it worthy of 5 stars, but that is what has happened with this book.
And let me tell you it is worth every single one of those 5 stars.
This is a story about a young girl, Becca, who's life spirals out of control quicker that she realizes and, just when she starts to wise up to what has happened, things go from bad to worse.

Her best friend Asher knows there is something seriously wrong, he just has no idea just how out of control things had become.

This is a book that you will start to read and not want to put it down until you get to the very end. It is compelling,  moving and emotional. And it also makes you realize as a parent that these things can go on right under your nose and you don't always see it.

In saying all of that this is also a story of a young woman who is rediscovering who she is and what she wants. She is rebuilding her relationships that had fallen by the wayside during the time she was in her crappy relationship and she is finally seeing things for what they are.
The only trouble is that in doing so, she has potentially placed herself, Asher and their families in danger.

Author Ashley Bodette has taken an extremely serious and common issue and written a story around it in a way that has the potential to open the minds of anyone that chooses to read it. She has written  is based on her own reality (see the aknowledgements section) and because of that it is an accurate and realistic portrayal of a young girl in this situation.

It would be great if all parents and high school students could read this book. It is a huge issue and not one that is often freely discussed. This book would be a great starting point to get these much needed conversations started!

This story was wonderful. I loved the storyline and the characters. The story deals with some very real, very emotional problems. It is very well researched and written. Becca and Asher will pull you in immediately. The relationship that they have is incredible. They both have very high values and stick to their guns. Becca is slowly coming back to herself and the strong woman she was destined to be. Asher is by her side and helps her instead of trying to solve the problems for her. I can relate to Becca and admire her for her courage. She did what it is so hard for others to do. Asher has quickly placed himself in my heart. He is an amazing man who is not afraid to let Becca shine. This was an incredible first book for Ashley and I am very glad I had the privilege to read it! I can’t wait to see what you have in store next!

For a debut novel this author has potential. It was not a bad start and it dealt with a subject matter that could be difficult to acknowledged in a relationship let alone people that you would prefer not anyone knowing or getting involved. This 3.5 stars read will make you aware of what exists in some relationships today.

Although I was not reacting to the characters of Becca, Asher, and Trip as I would have liked (it could have been the timeline of events or it could be how quick things progressed over a family trip); it did have some moments that will have you feeling irate, frustrated, and seeing the chemistry between friends which moved the story right along.

3.5 Stars
