༺ Matt a.k.a M. Pierce is
the author of four bestselling books -Ten Thousand Nights, Mine Brook, The
Silver Cord and Harm’s Way. Are there plans to release parts
of these books for the fans of the trilogy? Are there plans to release
parts of The Surrogate?
Interesting
question. I’ve thought about how cool it would be to write The Surrogate,
and also how intimidating. I grew up reading epic fantasy novels and tried my
hand at one (thank God the world will never see that). The truth is,
speculative fiction is a huge challenge. World building, culture building – I’m
not sure I’m equal to the task.
That
said, I sometimes get an itch to write the first few scenes of The Surrogate.
If I did, I would definitely share them with my readers.
I have
no plans to write the other books in fictional M. Pierce’s oeuvre, but who
knows? I’m fond of the titles. One in particular.
༺ How did Pamela Wing of The Granite
Wing Agency first come to represent Matt?
I
envisioned Matt querying a bunch of agents with his first novel, Ten
Thousand Nights, and getting a lot of rejections, as is usually the case.
The agent who finally sparked to his work was Pam Wing.
It’s
funny; I would swear I wrote about this process in one of the Night Owl Trilogy
books, but do you think I can remember now? Maybe the scene got cut. I recall
my agent telling me that a few moments in the trilogy felt too much like
“insider baseball,” so I trimmed some “publishing world” material. My editor
also advised me that the inner workings of the publishing world are not of a
general interest to readers. That was hard for me to understand, because I’ve
always been fascinated by publishing. I remember cutting a scene where Matt
recollected something Pam told him about Ten Thousand Nights. It was
something my agent said to me about Night Owl. “It’s good, but you can
do better.”
༺ Even though Bethany signed a
confidentiality agreement and later revealed who M. Pierce really is – how come
Matt didn’t sue her?
Good
question. I sort of left that open in Night Owl. Yes, Matt had an NDA
with Bethany, and yes, she breached their contract. To my mind, Matt knew he’d
done a terrible thing to Bethany (cheating on her), and I believe he felt that
he got what he deserved. She exposed him, but in a way, he exposed her, too—to
his cruelty, to embarrassment and pain. The fallout from Matt’s loss of privacy
(temporarily losing Hannah and permanently losing his anonymity) couldn’t have
been restored by a lawsuit, and he definitely didn’t need monetary
compensation.
༺ The very last scene in Last Light,
Hannah asks Matt a very important question. It seems very much out of the
blue – what made her ask? Can you tell us what Matt’s says?
At that
point in Last Light, Hannah has seen some pretty bad sides of Matt. He’s
done crazy things. Really, nothing has been easy for the couple. But Matt comes
back to Hannah, and he makes sacrifices for her. I maintain that love is a
choice more than a feeling. Maybe it begins as a feeling, but lasting love is
always a choice. At the end of Last Light, Hannah asks the question she
asks because she’s made her choice.
And I
can’t tell you what Matt says, but After Dark can.
༺ It is apparent there is some
conflict between Matt and Seth. Can you tell us more about why they don’t
get along?
At some
point in the Night Owl Trilogy, Matt describes his brothers’ reactions to his
past substance abuse. He says that Nate was always steadfast, patient, and
loving, whereas Seth didn’t seem to care. That didn’t set up Seth and Matt for
a great adult relationship.
Seth,
of course, falls for Hannah in Last Light, and that’s a big problem for
Matt.
༺ What has caused Matt’s severe
introversion and fear of people?
Good
question. I am not sure Matt is afraid of people so much as disappointed in
them. He doesn’t meet many people worth knowing. I view him as a young man who
was always very feeling and ambitious, who had no patience for fools, no
patience for gossip, etc. Hannah occasionally picks on Matt's snobby attitude,
and she’s right about that. He’s a snob. He secludes himself from people
because he doesn’t want to know most people.
༺ If you had to describe the finale
of this trilogy in three words, what would they be?
Passionate
Emotional
Resonant
༺ What was the most memorable moment
for you while writing this addictive, break your wrist page turning, and
electrifying trilogy?
I’ve
been sitting here for a few minutes, dwelling on this question. It’s a great
question. The most memorable moment . . .
You
know, I think finishing Night Owl was the most memorable moment. An
author can never go back to that time, before publication. Most authors are
very eager to get out of that time—I know I was—but as with many things,
we can’t fully appreciate what we have until it’s gone.
I will
never forget writing Night Owl. That silent, exhilarating freedom. When
it was done, I knew I had something good on my hands. I just knew it. Then I
revised it and revised it and revised it. And I never got tired of rereading
it. It’s a real piece of my heart, that book.
༺ Will we be seeing these characters
again? Any spin-offs in the works? (please don’t let this be the end!)
I hate
to disappoint, but I don’t plan to do anything more with Matt and Hannah. Who
knows, though? Maybe I’ll change my mind in the future.
