The Shape of My Heart by Ann Aguirre ~ FMR REVIEWS

Title: The Shape of My Heart (2B Trilogy, #3)
Author: Ann Aguirre
Release Date: November 25, 2014

Synopsis:
Some people wait decades to meet their soul mate. Courtney Kaufman suspects she met hers in high school only to lose him at seventeen. Since then, Courtney's social life has been a series of meaningless encounters, though she's made a few close friends along the way. Especially her roommate Max Cooper, who oozes damaged bad-boy vibes from every pore.

Max knows about feeling lost and trying to move beyond the pain he's been on his own since he was sixteen. Now it's time to find out if he can ever go home again, and Courtney's the only one he trusts to go with him. But the trip to Providence could change everything because the more time he spends with Courtney, the harder it is to reconcile what he wants and what he thinks he deserves.

It started out so simple. One misfit helping another. Now Max will do anything to show Courtney that for every heart that's ever been broken, there's another that can make it complete.

This book was a 4 star read for me. I didn’t realize that it was book 3 in a series, not sure how I missed that one, but after the first chapter it really didn’t matter. The book spiraled back and briefly covered themes in the previous books therefore making it seem pretty fluid. I easily read it as a standalone and enjoyed it.
I really fell in love with the theme of the book “racing sorrow” and felt connected to it throughout the book.  “Every morning we get up, racing sorrow, and telling ourselves this is the day we put it behind us for good”. This was a great storyline for the characters to live and work through. It was great to see the characters move from one sorrow to another seamlessly as though trying to fit pieces to a puzzle together.
The characters were great. I like the college scene in books and this one didn’t disappoint. So many auxiliary characters made this dynamic work well. I was easily brought into the main characters lives as separate individuals, couples and friends. The author did a great job meshing personalities and interests and there were no holes left unfilled.
This book was an easy read and an enjoyable one. I appreciated the spiral of events from the first 2 books since I did read this as a standalone. I recommend the book and hope to read more of Ann Aguirre’s work.

Not sure what to say about this book other than it was good, not bad, not great but good. It had its funny moments with the main female character being funny and very easy to relate to. "If my life were a romantic comedy, I wouldn't be the star. I'd be the witty, wise-cracking friend, telling the Reese Witherspoon character to follow her heart, and I'd be played by America Ferrera, Hollywood's idea of an ugly duckling." We have all been there, feeling like the ugly duckling. You couldn't help but root for her in her quest to find love.

Then there's Max. The super hot, tattooed, sweet lovable lead male character. You couldn't help but fall for him and his sweet talking, charismatic ways. Who wants his best friend Courtney to be happy, even if it means its not with him.

So my honest opinion? Like I said before, I wasn't great but wasn't bad. You could take it or leave it.

Shape of My Heart in the third book in the 2B trilogy, though it can be read as a standalone, I suggest you read this series in order.
I have to start by saying I fell for Max in book one, I fell even harder in book two so I could not wait for his story!  In the first two books I seriously fell in love with Nadia, Max, Lauren and Angus- the roommates in 2B.  The first two book were so good that I seriously high expectations for Max’s story and I hate to say this but I was somewhat disappointed.
First of all, Max is amazing! I adored him from the beginning and still am completely enamored by him. He is this big, tattoo covered, motorcycle riding teddy bear. He has such a huge heart despite his past. Max had been on his own since he was 16 and never really had a sense of family until he went to college and met his roommates.  In the first two books Max is portrayed as a man-whore and I was very happy to see that he was nothing like I thought he would be. He had a bit of ego but beneath that was a vulnerability that made him so much more human.
What was disappointing about this story was our heroine (I don’t even want to call her that), Courtney. I found her to be whiny, irritating and just not likeable and that made me seriously sad because I adored all the other female leads in the previous books. I really felt disconnected from her and I also felt like Max could do better than her. I cannot even explain it but I really would have liked more with this character. I wanted to like her, I tried to like her, I talked to other Grinders who were reading this and talked about the character in hopes of finding some sort of redeeming quality in her but I just couldn’t.  I felt like I knew Max better than Courtney so I would have liked her to be a bit more developed.
The story line itself was pretty good but again I felt like I have read it before. Two people from different lifestyles and sordid pasts find each other blah blah blah. What really saved this for me was Max’s story line with his family. What happened in his past was heartbreaking. The support that Courtney had for Max when he was forced to return home was maybe her only redeemable moment but it was sweet and written extremely well.
Courtney’s past and what happened to force into moving in with the roommates when Lauren moved out fell short. The only thing I can really say is that I just wanted more.
The banter between the characters was laugh out loud funny and the sexy times where oh so sexy.  I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading this series because it actually is very good. Not everyone reads the same book and maybe my expectations on this were a little too high.
