When fate crosses their paths once more, will Brody still feel the same when he discovers the lie Darby fed him years ago? Will fate and lies rekindle what was? Or will Darby find a new life with Turner?

Second book in the Masquerade series but can be read as a standalone!

I enjoyed this book. It didn’t WOW me, but the author has created characters that are memorable. She also has a smooth, fluent writing style. I absolutely do not like reading books with love triangles and though this book had one, I just couldn’t tear my eyes from the page. Something compelled me to keep reading. I’m attributing it to the author’s writing.

The book begins with an 18 year-old Darby finding out she is pregnant. This next part that comes really rubbed me the wrong way, but I get it because this is who Darby is: someone who is completely selfless and will sacrifice herself for others. Instead of telling her high school sweetheart, Brody, she is pregnant, she RUNS off to her mother in Florida, and CUTS ALL TIES with him just so he can go on and play baseball. I’m sorry, I’m going to be selfish here and say I could never, ever, make that kind of decision. At the very least, I would have told the boyfriend. Perhaps Darby’s choice made me hate her because she was soselfless or admire her because of the sacrifice she made. I don’t know. Her reasons for doing so, I completely understood. I didn’t like it, but I kept chanting to myself “this is a second-chance romance, they’ll get together later.”

Fast forward to Aiden’s (Darby and Brody’s son) 2nd birthday party.

Darby is a hardworking single mother and doesn’t date. She meets the super sexy Turner Matthews in the gym and though they are both attracted to each other, Darby stays away because she’s still confused about her feelings for Brody (even though it’s been years). Later, she accepts a job at the Masquerade Club where Turner is a manager. Their attraction just burns off the chart until….*dun dun dun* Brody is back!

***CUT***

The next part that comes I really struggled with. I don’t want to call Darby wishy-washy, but she juggled the two men back and forth. When judgment day arrived, I DID NOT appreciate how she “chose” which one to be with. To me, it always felt like he was second-best, and if events didn’t happen the way they did, she may have ended up with the other.

Overall, the book’s writing and voice spoke out to me. It was captivating enough to keep me turning the pages, but I wasn’t particularly invested in any one character.
